Field of Remembrance (2017-2019)

Fields of Remembrance builds on our longstanding relationship with Paganel Primary School in Weoley Castle.  The school have their own ARCHON registered Archives at the school and hold a weekly After-School Archives group and have been supported by PHC member Marcus Belben.

As part of our work to mark the Centenary of the First World War we have been helping pupils to explore the impact of the war on their neighbourhood.

Lottery Players and the Heritage Lottery funded project has enabled us to take pupils to key sites in the area to deepen their understanding of the period.  At Lodge Hill Cemetery they have been exploring the stories behind the names engraved on plot B10 – the Commonwealth War Graves.  Through interactive activities they have covered topics ranging from the role of military personnel from across the British Empire, recruitment of underage boys, the Labour Corps and the role of local hospital facilities at places such as the University of Birmingham and Highbury Hall.

A series of visits and workshops took pupils to visit local sites like Stonehouse Lane, the Hall of Memory in Centenary Square, the ‘Birmingham: Its History, Its People’ gallery at Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery, The Cadbury Research Library and University of Birmingham, Parliamentary Archives and the ‘Voices of the First World War: community projects from Birmingham and the Midlands’ exhibition, as well as involving pupils from Rookery Primary School and the University of Birmingham School.
